Beijing - China

Residence

Résidence de Song QinglingiFormer residences of famous people really help to make up the fabric of a city. They are valuable witnesses to how the privileged lived throughout the centuries.

During the Yuan Dynasty, the country was politically unified. Since that time, Beijing has been at the centre of the county, both politically and culturally, and a magnet for both scientists and intellectuals from all corners of the country, as well as other nationalities. Whether they were well-read, artists, scientists, military or something else, these people left an indelible impression on Beijing.

A great many people have contributed to the development, and to the story of Beijing. Their former residences (or temples for ancestor worship) help to track their passage through Beijing's history. These former residences are centered around three areas, Dongcheng, Xicheng and Xuanwu. Traditionally, the richer residents lived in the West and East parts of the city, whilst the poorer residents lived in the North and the South. This explains why Dongcheng and Xicheng are generally more attractive than Nancheng and Beicheng.
