Religion in Beijing is quite diverse. The main religion is Buddhism, which encompasses Lamaism, and Taoism, Islam and Christianity (mainly Catholicism). Religious beliefs played an important role in the history, culture and development of art in Beijing, with Buddhism, Taoism and Islam playing the largest roles.
There are around forty places of worship in Beijing, including a few churches such as the Church of Dongjiaominxiang, the Church of Xuanwumen, and the church of Xizhimen.
There are also numerous of mosques, including those at Niujie, Dongsi, and Huashi. If you want to see Buddhist temples, then there's the Temple Guanghua and the Temple Tongjiao. The Lama Temple (Yong He Gong) and the Xihuang Temple are the best known Lamaist temples. The Temple of the White Cloud (Baiyun) is the biggest Taoist temple in the city. These temples are not only places of worship frequented by their followers, but also tourist sites, which is one of the reasons for their long history.
