Winter sports in Beijing

Winter sports in BeijingThe mere mention of skiing evokes a brilliant mental image: one envisions themselves gliding smoothly down majestic slopes at an exhilarating pace. They picture the glistening snow below them and an endless sapphire sky above. In every skier's heart lies the desire to go beyond all limits, to race down the slopes faster than ever before.

Skiing incorporates fierce strength and intensity into an exciting sport which has been warmly embraced as a popular form of winter exercise by Beijingers. Especially among the younger generation, skiing has become a much loved topic of discussion and weekend activity. Nanshan Ski Village (南山滑雪场), to the North of Beijing, and Shijinglong Ski Resort (石京龙滑雪场) can both be conveniently reached by car. A majestic white world awaits Beijing's skiing enthusiasts, who enjoy themselves here to their hearts' contents.

Beijing's ski resorts generally open in late November or early December, when outdoor temperatures drop to below 5°C. Skiers may bring their own equipment, although they may also rent it. Cafes, restaurants and hotels are all located on site. Skiing can be paid for on a time segment basis (per hour), or per run. Expect two hour time segments to cost 150-230 RMB (including equipment hire and life pass) depending on location. The per hour price decreases the longer you ski. On a per run basis, skiing cards for ten or twenty runs can be purchased. Season passes are also available. The per run fees allow visitors to ski at their own pace without a time limit. Rental and other fees are also generally included when using the per run system.
