People’s Republic

People's Republic (1949- )

On October 1st 1949, over 300 000 people gather in TianAnMen Square to attend the State's founding ceremony where Chairman Mao proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Socialism's Great Leap Forward happened from 1957 to 1966 in China.

The Cultural Revolution, the most destructive after the founding of the People's Republic of China, lasted from May 1966 to October 1976.

In 1979, Deng Xiaoping sets up economic reform, through the reform of economic policy, China goes on a path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The economy and quality of life in China grew considerably. This is the first major development after its founding.

In 1993, Jiang Zemin succeeded to Deng Xiaoping becoming the third generation of power, and continuing the path of reform. This is a period of political stabilization, economic growth and development of diplomacy.

In 2003, Hu Jintao was selected as chairman of the People's Republic of China, and started pushing for the development of harmonious society.

In 2008, the Olympic Games will be held in Beijing.
