The May 4th 1919 movement is considered to be the spiritual source of many major events in Chinese contemporary history. The origin of this uprising lies in the unequal treaties imposed on China after the First World War. This patriotic movement, raised by students, spread rapidly in all spheres of Chinese society and brought in new strains of thought, especially Marxism-Leninism.
In 1921, 12 members of the Communist workshop, including Mao Zedong, founded the Chinese Communist Party. During the revolution of the new democracy commissioned by the Chinese Communist Party, China witnessed the Northern Expedition (1924 - 1927), the War of Terrain (1927 - 1937), the Sino-Japanese War (1937 - 1945), and the War of Liberation (1945 - 1949). During the Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Communist Party and Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) allied to obtain independence. In 1945, the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party came into conflict, after three Years of civil war the Chinese Communist Party overthrew the Kuomintang and created People's Republic of China in 1949.
