Beijing - China

Chinese traditional culture

As a result of the burgeoning Chinese economy, traditional Chinese culture seems to have been put on the back burner. Nevertheless, aspects of traditional cultures still persist in everyday Chinese life. Smells play a large part of traditional life: the wafts of herbs from Chinese medicine shops, smoke from firecrackers at New Year celebrations, and incense being burnt at temples...

Traditional culture is manifested in all walks of life. In parks, you can see old men practicing tai chi, or writing calligraphy on the pavement with enormous water-filled brushes. Noise also plays a large part in traditional culture. Chinese opera singers sing about the history of China, dressed resplendently in brightly coloured costumes. The beating of gongs throughout is another integral part of the performance, along with the hot chinese tea that is drunk formally, and the red paper cutouts showing images of a timeless China. Unchanged for years, it is an integral part of Chinese life.
