All you need to know on cyclones: Latest cyclonic information and current cyclonic season.
With an altitude of 21° south and a longitude of 55°3, Réunion Island boasts a relatively temperate tropical climate. The south east trade winds blow almost all year round over the island.
With its rugged relief, (and from a climatic perspective) Réunion Island is divided into two parts, the eastern coast, commonly known as windward side and the western coast, commonly known as leeward side. In view of the diversity of the relief, the experts noted over 200 micro climates. Let’s have a closer look at the two major climates in Réunion Island.
The windward side (in the east) is subjected to trade winds all year round (about 9 out of 12 months).
Hence, this result in heavy rainfall and offers a lush green vegetation. On the upper parts of Sainte-Rose, over 10m rainfall is recorded yearly.
The leeward side (in the west) is rather dried. Here, the luxuriant vegetation is found only in areas which are very…watered. The town of Saint-Gilles records less than 1m rainfall yearly.
Almost every afternoon, the weather is very overcasted on the upper parts, and it gets very cold in the high-lying areas. (Very often, the temperatures drop to nearly 5°C on winter mornings in Plaine-des-Cafres).
