Opened in 1999, the restaurant "Boys and Girls" has two branches in Beijing offering cuisine from Sichuan and Hunan Provinces. Tuck in...
The word Liu Zhe Kun uses to describe the cuisine at "Boys and Girls" restaurant, located in the far East of Beijing, is "simple". The reason behind this is that the food that comes from the kitchen represents the simple and tasty family fare from these two central Chinese provinces. It's not extravagant, but appetizing all the same.
Opened in 1999 by a Chinese man who already owns a bar of the same name in Sanlitun (one of the liveliest areas in east Beijing), as well as another restaurant in Yayuncun, in the north, "Boys and Girls" offers a diverse menu, nicely illustrated with pictures. The inclusion of pictures helps non-Chinese speakers enormously, as the majority of the names of the dishes have cultural and regional references. Even when reading their approximate English translations, the names of some dishes remain quite obscure. For instance, the Zhou Sister Special Flavour (6 RMB), one of the six specialties of the restaurant, is a very spicy rabbit head.
The management have tried hard to outfit the restaurant Western style, but unfortunately, they haven't got the atmosphere quite right. This big restaurant includes sixteen private rooms decked out with multicoloured wallpaper. These, together with the main dining hall, give the restaurant a maximum capacity of around 600 people. Both round and square tables have white tablecloths, and contrast nicely with the dark wooden walls and green paneling, which are decorated with the front pages of various Western magazines. The brown, green and orange floral floor tiles echo the chandeliers and fake guitars nailed above the large bar.
